How do YOU do it?
Posted on | December 19, 2008 |
We’ve all seen the lists of ways to save energy and money. But talk (and lists) are cheap. What do we actually DO to control the size of the utility and fuel bills?
How do YOU save energy?
How big is saving energy on YOUR priority list?
Why? Why not?

We live in an old drafty house, so energy savings are important to us.
We shrink-wrap our single-pane windows to reduce drafts and heat loss.
Our oil-fired boiler also heats our hot water, and there are only two of us in the house, so we turn the boiler all the way off as often as possible: at night, during the day when we’re gone, etc.
We wear sweaters when it’s cold, and keep the heat turned low, when we turn it on at all.
We recently purchased an Energy Star-rated refrigerator, to replace our old, inefficient model. It uses about 2/3 of the electricity of the previous unit.
We keep lights turned off in rooms we’re not in.
We have a collection of reusable cloth shopping bags in each of our cars, so we don’t have to pick up new plastic shopping bags wherever we go.
We reuse the plastic shopping bags we can’t avoid picking up.
We try not to make single purpose trips in the cars.
We drive high gas-mileage cars.
There’s a lot more… we think about it a LOT.
